Mount Monadnock, which we can see from our New Hampshire backyard, is either the most or the second-most hiked mountain in the world, depending on who you ask. A monadnock, derived from the first nation Abenaki word for mountain, is a mountain that stands alone, jutting up from its surroundings in spectacular fashion.

At 3,165 feet, it’s not a completely daunting climb, but challenging enough that rescue teams regularly have to assist lost and injured hikers many times each year, summer and winter. As I drive by it most days, it looks grand indeed.

Last week, on my daily before-work hike with my dog, Chica, I visited Eagle Rock on a trail near Mount Monadnock. It’s a lovely spot to stop because of the early-morning solitude and beautiful views in two directions.
