A few years ago, I cut my ties with a friend of many decades. After months of reflection and much rumination about the impact the ending would have on another close friendship that I care deeply about, I decided to end the friendship.

Partly due to my line of work and partly due to my personality, I don’t tend to walk away from friendships. This is the only one I can recall that ended because I decided I didn’t want the friendship any longer. I value my friendships highly and will work hard to sort out rough spots with my friends.

At the same time, I don’t believe all conflict is worth working hard to work through. Occasionally, conflict is a wake-up call.
